Makoom's Menagerie

I know a few months back that I stopped uploading my monthly mix episode, Makoom’s Menagerie. It hurt me to do this, but due to my job and life, I didn’t have the capacity to make the mix. I appreciate everyone’s patience, and I am beyond excited to tell you that this month will mark the return of my monthly radio show. I promise, you do not want to miss the first episode because it will include numerous never before heard Makoom IDs and some in the mix spins for my latest releases! I’m happy the wait is almost over and keep your eyes on my socials for the latest about when Makoom’s Menagerie ‘November 2024’ goes live! If you want to catch previous episodes, hit up the link below.

Listen to By Your Side Today!

My collaboration, ‘By Your Side’ with Ambience is out now on Dark Soho. It’s getting a lot of great responses and I invite you to check it out yourself! We loved making this track that includes a combo of dark dancing beats, a beautiful French vocal hook, and some hands in the air melodies.

Tip of the Month: Kick & Sub Relation

Do you feel like you make pretty good music, but it never sounds good on speakers or big sound systems? Does it feel like your sub bass is holding your kick back or the other way around? This tip of the month is for you. Your kick and sub are the most important part of your track to getting the crowd moving:

  1. Pick a sub bass in key with your kick. I like to use a kick that is a perfect fourth or fifth above the key of my track. For example, if my track is in E minor, I’ll use a kick in B

  2. Generally, you want your sub bass to stay about 2-3 db below your kick to avoid overpowering your kick

  3. Put an LFO Tool, Kickshaper, or any other ducking tool on your sub bass.

  4. Shape the sub to make sure its completely out of the way of the first half of your kick

  5. Put another LFO Tool on a group of your kick and sub, reduce the depth to zero, and bring the curve down to view the relationship between your kick and sub

  6. You want your sub to rise to about 80% of the height of your kick in the group to ensure that it carries energy without overpowering the kick

  7. EQ your kick and sub to taste. Pay close attention to the area around 100-130 hertz. This tends to make your low end sound muddy and I like to do a 1-1.25 db Q value: 3 reduction using Fabfilter’s Pro-Q3 to take some of that out of the sound

  8. Most importantly, remember to use your ears. If it sounds good in your mix, it probably is!

A Great Kick/Sub Relation

Photo of the Month

I had a unique opportunity to play an unexpected DJ set recently. I really loved the atmosphere and the reactions that everyone had to my latest IDs. It meant a ton that people enjoyed my tracks because they are representative of where I am right now. A great show is infectious and this was a top tier show for me even with a small crowd! Check this picture out and I hope to see you at a show soon!
